Hutton Gibson — Sirianist? [Nov. 5th, 2006|08:43 pm]

Hutton Gibson

I admire Hutton Gibson, Patrick Henry Omlor and the late Dr. Rama Coomaraswamy for their critical contributions to the Catholic Traditionalist movement, the Catholic Resistance to the Modernist Apostasy, although, just as critically, I disagree sharply with them on critical issues.

In December 2005, I found that some person(s) were using the English Wikipedia to allege that Mel Gibson and his father were part of a 'Holy Family sect'. In addressing that rubbish, I wrote that Hutton Gibson is a Sirianist, that is, a follower of the thesis that Giuseppe Siri, former Archbishop of Genoa, was the true Pope from October 1958 to his death in 1989.

However, I was contradicted quite firmly with the assertion, "It has been repeatedly — and incorrectly — claimed that Hutton Gibson is a Sirianist", etc.

The anonymous person who contradicted me, went on to write:

Though it has often been reported that Mr. Hutton Gibson is a supporter of 'The Siri Thesis' this claim is totally incorrect. Mr. Hutton Gibson is neither a supporter of nor a believer in 'The Siri Thesis'. The fact is that Mr. Hutton Gibson investigated the claims being made regarding Cardinal Joseph Siri and "The Siri Thesis", Mr. Hutton Gibson found these claims to be without merit and proceeded to publicly (see the "War is Now" issue # 64, issue #65) state that "The Siri Thesis" is a totally unsubstantiated hypothesis that is not founded upon verifiable facts and as such is total fiction without merit.

In the past, it has also been incorrectly claimed, that Mr. Hutton Gibson is associated "in propagating Sirianism" by which is really meant "The Siri Thesis" with "Gary Giuffre, Jim Condit Jr., David Hobson and the Vietnamese-American Fr. Peter Tran Van Khoat". Mr. Hutton Gibson is NOT a supporter of "The Siri Thesis”. Mr. Hutton Gibson is NOT active in propagating "The Siri Thesis" in fact the very opposite is true. Mr. Hutton Gibson has publicly stated in his newsletters that the belief held by some that Cardinal Joseph Siri was elected pope in 1958, 1963, and twice in 1978 is an allegation that upon investigation by Mr. Hutton Gibson was found to be totally without merit. Mr. Hutton Gibson is not a supporter of nor is he associated with Mr. Gary Giuffre, Mr. Jim Condit Jr., Mr. David Hobson nor Fr. Peter Tran Van Khoat.

This text was a part of the Hutton Gibson entry for quite some time before it was whittled down to the bare assertion, and that too was moved out to the entry on Sirianism [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutton_Gibson & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirianism].

Now, I was writing out of memory, but since I could not recall whether I had any concrete proof or not, I have kept quiet now for nearly a year.

Recently, however, while going over my pages in another matter, I came across Hutton Gibson's letter to me in 1997, in response to my tract "Repair My Church", along with his "The War Is Now!", number 36 of May 1995 [http://www.geocities.com/prakashjm45/rmc/rmchugi1.html & http://www.geocities.com/prakashjm45/rmc/rmchugi2.html]

A reading of this "The War Is Now!" #36 is enough to convince anybody that Mr. Gibson was, indeed,, a Sirianist of sorts and even if only for a time.

And that time seems to have been many years, for Mr. Gibson published his views on the subject in 1995, sent it to me two years later in 1997 and obviously held on to these ideas atleast until sometime in 2005!

It was by means of his Jan. 2006 issue of "The War Is Now!", #66, that Mr. Gibson notified to the world his rejection of Sirianism [http://www.geocities.com/livrant/the-war-is-now-no-66.html].

So, is there any truth to the assertion "It has been repeatedly — and incorrectly — claimed that Hutton Gibson is a Sirianist", etc.? I leave it to the reader to draw the conclusion!!!

Kind regards,

Lúcio Mascarenhas, Bombay
